Emirates Team New Zealand has taken the lead in the MedCup Camper regatta at Barcelona.

With three races sailed on the third day, NZL 380 took a first, third and a second and with 19 points leads the regatta by five points from Artemis (Sweden) on 24 points, with Quantum (USA) on 25. Bribon (Spain) is fourth on 36.

Skipper Dean Barker, while happy with the day, is not relaxing for a second. “We are only halfway through the regatta with five more races scheduled. Artemis and Quantum are only a few points adrift.

“Today we took the opportunities when we could and stayed out of trouble. Everything came together: the crew work was flawless, NZL 380’s speed was very good and we did a good job of identifying the best side of the course.

It was important to go out and have a good solid day and we did that. Artemis is sailing much better here than they have at the other regattas, but we haven’t seen them all regatta yet and they are only a few points behind.”

Day 3 at Barcelona was long and tiring. The breeze did not arrive until 2pm and the fleet did not return to the dock until 8pm.

After a morning postponement ashore waiting for the breeze to build, racing got underway in 17 knots of sea breeze and under clear skies. The wind backed to the left for the third race.

Grant Dalton said he was very pleased with the day.

“We sailed well. We were aggressive and backed ourselves when we needed to. The crew work was excellent. The boys ground and pumped themselves to a standstill. There were some tired bodies when they came off the water.”

Today’s performance extended Emirates Team New Zealand’s lead of the MedCup 2010 series to 25.5 points. The team now sits on 81.5 points, followed by Quantum Racing on 107 and Audi A1 on 124.
